We begin November by visiting the city of Hong Kong, which is surely one of the most watch-crazed cities in the world. Watch lovers who have stepped foot in Hong Kong have said that it feels like a watch wonderland. How true is this? Join us as we go watch shopping in Hong Kong.
Following up, we visit another watch-crazy city, this time in the Middle East. Yes, I’m referring to Dubai. That aside, we also paid a visit to a true horological institution, the shops of Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons. Find out what makes this luxury watch retailer so special in this month’s round-up.
Finally, we end off by speaking to the one and only Philippe Dufour to learn more about his approach to watchmaking and also to chat about hand-finishing and the industry in general. He also tells us about the difficulties of being an independent watch-maker. You don’t want to miss this.
1. Hong Kong Watch Shopping Wonderland
When it comes to James Bond wristwatch auction results, Omega Watches Toronto Replica Seamaster Planet Oceans hold the top two places. The top watch, used in the filming of Casino Royale, sold in the 2007 Antiquorum OmegaMania auction for CHF 250,250. Omega timepieces have emerged in a Number of Other films, including Up in the Air, Salt, War of the Worlds, The Bounty Hunter, The Ideal Stuff, Event Horizon, Millennium, Jack Reacher, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Ronin, Seven Years in Tibet, The Omega Man, and My Fellow Americans.Of class, one of Omega’s most famous starring characters came in Apollo 13. The film recorded the assignment with the unfortunate number that has been cut short by an explosion that deprived the spacecraft of most of its oxygen supply and electric power. The film accurately portrays the astronauts wearing Omega Speedmasters, and the key role the Speedmaster played in obtaining the team safely back to Earth. Due to the failure of an onboard electrical timer, the astronauts relied upon their Speedmasters to time critical burns (powering motors on and off). These burns needed to be precisely the right duration to acquire the spacecraft pointed in exactly the right direction so it might enter the air without bouncing off or burning. The Speedmasters performed perfectly, and the astronauts made it home safely.Official brand ambassadors aside, Omega has proven a favorite of many world leaders and celebrities. Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was frequently photographed wearing his gold Constellation Manhattan. From the aforementioned 1995 movie My Fellow Americans, Jack Lemmon plays a former American President. At one stage, Lemmon comments on his watch, saying “That’s a Constellation. It was given to me personally Gorbachev!”
Hong Kong is, as we all know, one of the most important cities in the world for watches. And watch lovers who have visited Hong Kong often remark that stepping into the city of Hong Kong is like stepping into watch wonderland. For those of you who haven’t had the chance to visit this magical place, here’s a look at our afternoon spent watch shopping in Hong Kong. I guarantee you’ll want to look up tickets to Hong Kong after reading this.
2. Jiusko Tourbillon JFL0168L-SG $2,500 Watch Review
The tourbillon is a mechanism developed by Abraham Louis Bregeut to counteract the effects of gravity on the balance of a pocket watch. Thanks to advances in materials technology, the tourbillon has little practical use today, but it is still widely regarded as one of the most complex mechanisms to build. It is also visually attractive and exciting. As such, watches with tourbillons, especially Swiss- and German-made ones, cost a pretty penny. However, we are seeing an increasing number of Chinese watch brands with tourbillon watches and this here is one of the latest – the Jiusko Tourbillon. If you have been dying to have a tourbillon but can’t stomach the prices that Swiss- and German-made ones command, this could be a viable alternative.
3. Harry Winston Opus 14 ‘Jukebox’ Watch Hands-On
There was talk some time ago after Swatch acquired Harry Winston that the Opus project would be stopped. Well, we are glad that didn’t happen, as the Opus project is responsible for some of horology’s most important and breathtaking watches. Just recently, Harry Winston lifted the sheets off its latest Opus watch – the Harry Winston Opus 14. It’s a watch of staggering numbers: 55mm wide, 22mm thick, a movement that has over 1,000 parts, 124 jewels, and 31 bridges. This is haute horology at its finest.
4. Dubai Watch Week: Reference Of The Middle East
Dubai is an important economic hub in the Middle East and easily one of the most important cities for watches in the region and even the world. This year, and just very recently, the city hosted its first ever watch week – the Dubai Watch Week. What’s important to note is that the inaugural event was actually spearheaded by renowned watch retailer Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons. To make sense of the Dubai Watch Week and to appreciate the significance of watches in this region is to understand the history of this legendary retailer, and also the importance and history of Dubai itself.
5. Why Philippe Dufour Is Disappointed With Today’s Watchmakers
I’m sure most of you know that Philippe Dufour is one of the most respected watchmakers in the world and is most renowned for his aesthetic taste and approach to hand-finishing. In fact, when Seiko embarked on their stunning Credor watches, they turned to Dufour to seek his advice. In this must-read interview, Dufour talks about his work and his approach towards watchmaking, and also shares his opinions on the current watch industry. But most of all, find out why he says he is disappointed with today’s watchmakers.
6. MB&F Legacy Machine Perpetual Calendar Watch Hands-On
As MB&F puts it themselves, the Legacy Machines are watches that the brand would have created themselves if it were 1915 instead of 2015. And what has surely become a hallmark of this collection is the exposed balance wheel on the dial. It is therefore fitting that the latest Legacy Machine Perpetual Calendar upholds this proud tradition. Incidentally, the MB&F Legacy Machine Perpetual Calendar is also MB&F’s first perpetual calendar watch, and it is just stunning to behold. It is clearly inspired by classic watches and yet still refreshingly modern at the same time. That’s MB&F for you.
